What is Disability Living Allowance (DLA)?

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a benefit that helps with the extra costs that disabled people face as a result of their disabilities. DLA is not a means tested benefit and is not affected by earnings, other income or savings. As part of its welfare reform programme, the Government is replacing Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for working age adults (aged 16 – 64). You can only make a new claim for DLA if you're claiming for a child under 16.

How it works

You simply exchange all, or part of your mobility allowance to lease the vehicle of your choice. You choose the vehicle you want at a price that works for you , and payments are deducted from your higher rate mobility allowance every four weeks, then paid directly to us by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Our standard lease is over three years, or five years if you are leasing a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle and we take care of running costs such as insurance for up to three named drivers (this doesn’t have to be you), servicing, maintenance, breakdown cover and tyre and windscreen repair and replacement. All you need to do is add fuel and go.

HOW YOUR CAR CAN BE USED

Before you can lease a vehicle through the Motability Scheme, you’ll need to make sure that you’re happy with the Scheme’s terms and conditions.

We'll ask you to make sure:

The car is used by, or for the benefit of, the disabled person. This does not mean that the disabled person needs to be in the car for every journey. In practice, this means other named drivers in the household can use the car for shopping and other routine activities, as long as the disabled customer will benefit. To ensure that you are gaining direct benefit from your Motability Scheme car, in some cases we may talk to you about fitting a location tracker. An example of this could be if none of your named drivers are resident at your address or you live in a care home where a number of drivers have access to the car. If this is the case, we will always speak to you in advance. Only named drivers listed on your Certificate of Motor Insurance can drive the car*. That you let us know about any changes that may affect your lease.

*We will only accept drivers who have a legally valid driving licence. Drivers with a non-UK driving licence will be subject to additional checks.

When you nominate your drivers, the Motability Scheme dealer will need to sign a'Statement of Responsibilities' form to confirm you understand/agree to the Ts & Cs for using your Motability vehicle. So you get the maximum benefit from your car, any named drivers should live close to your home, within 5 miles. We do understand that this may not be possible. To protect the Scheme, there are a few rules surrounding who can drive your car.

  • If none of the drivers live at the disabled customer's address, or the disabled customer lives in a care home where a number of drivers have access to the car, we may consider a location tracker, to ensure the customer is gaining direct benefit from the car. We will always speak to the customer to discuss this in advance.
  • Drivers aged under 25 are restricted to cars with an ABI Insurance Group 16 or lower and with a power output of 120 brake horsepower (BHP) or less. This does not apply to Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles.
  • Only one named driver under 21 is permitted. This could be the disabled customer, or another driver living at the same address.

Your agreement will include:

A brand new Ford of your choice every three years Insurance, loss and damage protection, personal accident cover for named drivers and passengers

  • Servicing, maintenance and repairs at your Ford Dealer
  • Full breakdown assistance from the RAC
  • Window and windscreen replacement at no extra cost
  • A 60,000 mile allowance during the three years
  • Free replacement tyres fitted by Kwik-Fit
  • The most popular adaptations arranged through your Motability accredited Ford Dealer

There are many vehicles available at no additional cost to your allowance, but if you do want a higher specification vehicle or one of our larger cars, you will need to pay an additional one-off ‘Advance Payment’ when you sign for your new vehicle.
